💍 Why We Publish Our Methodology
Our methodology explains how ring-size information on this site is organised, calculated and presented. Ring sizing can vary because of measurement method, rounding, band width, finger shape, temperature and jeweller-specific charts.
We use physical measurements such as inside diameter and circumference as the foundation, then map those values to practical UK letter sizes and approximate international equivalents.
This methodology supports the calculators, charts and measuring guides across the site. It is intended as a practical sizing framework rather than a substitute for an in-person professional fitting.
📏 Physical Measurement First
Diameter and circumference provide a useful common reference because they describe the actual ring opening instead of only a country-specific size label.
🔤 UK Letter Mapping
Measured values are matched to the nearest practical British ring-size letter, including half sizes where available in the reference chart.
🌍 International Comparison
US/Canada and EU sizes are shown as approximate equivalents because the underlying systems do not always align exactly.
🧮 Calculator Logic
Inputs are normalised to millimetres where required and compared against a reference size table to identify the closest match.
🔎 Reasonableness Checks
We review size progression, unit conversion and the mathematical relationship between diameter and circumference.
⚠️ Limits Are Disclosed
We explain that home measurements and conversion charts are guides and that retailer-specific sizing may differ.
Input
User enters size or measurement.
Normalise
Values are converted into comparable metric units.
Compare
The value is checked against the reference table.
Match
The nearest UK ring size is selected.
Explain
Diameter, circumference and conversions are shown.
Inside Diameter
The inside diameter is measured straight across the empty centre of a ring from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge. The metal band is excluded.
Finger Circumference
Finger circumference is the distance around the part of the finger where the ring will sit. For home measurement, a flexible tape or non-stretch strip should be snug without compressing the skin.
Our calculators use a nearest-match approach. After an input is converted into a comparable metric value, the calculator selects the reference size with the smallest numerical difference.
This is practical for online sizing because home measurements are rarely exact to fractions of a millimetre. However, the nearest mathematical match may not always be the best physical fit for a prominent knuckle, a wide band or unusual measuring conditions.
UK to US / Canada
We compare UK sizes with the nearest practical North American equivalents. Because the systems use different increments, some UK half sizes fall between common US sizes.
UK to EU
European sizing is often closely related to circumference-based metric values, so physical measurement remains an important comparison point.
International conversions are labelled as approximate. If a retailer provides diameter or circumference, we recommend comparing those physical measurements before relying only on a country-to-country label.
| Check | What We Review | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Size progression | Diameter and circumference should increase consistently. | Helps identify obvious table errors. |
| Formula consistency | Diameter and circumference are compared using the circle relationship. | Confirms measurements are mathematically plausible. |
| Unit conversion | Millimetres and inches use 25.4 mm per inch. | Prevents inconsistent calculator outputs. |
| Conversion reasonableness | International equivalents are checked against physical measurements. | Reduces misleading mappings. |
| Content review | Guides include fit warnings and measurement advice. | Helps users understand calculator limitations. |
What Our Tools Can Do
- ✓Estimate a UK size from diameter or circumference.
- ✓Show approximate international equivalents.
- ✓Provide consistent calculations across the site.
What Our Tools Cannot Guarantee
- !Exact fit for every finger shape or knuckle.
- !Identical sizing across every jeweller.
- !Perfect alignment between all international systems.
We review methodology when we add a new calculator, change a reference table, introduce another international sizing system or identify a material issue in how a result is presented.
Where multiple pages use the same core sizing data, we aim to keep the measurement logic consistent rather than creating conflicting charts across the site.
Our methodology uses published ring-size references and physical measurement relationships as the basis for calculators and charts. For formal measurement terminology, we reference the ISO 8653 ring-size standard.
Retailer-specific charts may still differ, so final sizing should be checked against the jeweller supplying the ring.
